Zeon’s Aerial Ace: The Dodai YS Bomber

The Dodai YS: A Bomber Aircraft of the Principality of Zeon

The Dodai YS is a versatile bomber aircraft featured in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. Originally developed by the Principality of Zeon as an interceptor-bomber, it was later converted into an improvised sub-flight system to assist in the movement of mobile suits.

Design and Capabilities

The Dodai YS boasts a unique design, capable of achieving vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) by taking air into its upper surface and releasing it from its lower surface. Additionally, it is equipped with a large number of rocket boosters for quick takeoffs on the frontline. Its engine produces a high amount of thrust compared to the weight of the aircraft.

The Dodai YS is armed with eight missile launchers mounted on the front of the aircraft, although its air-to-air combat capabilities are limited. To compensate, it is often escorted by a squadron of Dopp fighters.

Mobile Suit Transport

One of the Dodai YS’s most notable features is its ability to carry a mobile suit, which stands on top of the aircraft. This allows the mobile suit to use its weapons while on board, expanding its effective range and providing air combat capabilities. The Dodai YS was primarily intended to operate alongside the MS-07B Gouf, and as such, a forehead antenna was standard equipment for the Gouf to facilitate communication with the Dodai YS.

History and Variants

The Dodai YS was used by the Zeon Military during the One Year War. After the war, the Earth Federation continued to develop the idea of piloted craft serving as sub-flight systems for mobile suits, leading to the development of the Dodai II and the Base Jabber.

The Dodai YS also saw action in later conflicts, including the First Neo Zeon War and the events of U.C. 0096.

Gunpla and Action Figures

The Dodai YS has been featured in various Gunpla models and action figures, including the 1/144 Original Dodai YS model kit and the Robot Damashii “Do-dai YS & Gouf Option Set” (Ver. A.N.I.M.E.).
