Mobile Suit Revolution: The Secret Project That Changed the Course of War

The RX Project: A Turning Point in Mobile Suit Development

In the midst of the Universal Century era, the Earth Federation Forces embarked on a top-secret initiative known as the RX Project. This ambitious undertaking aimed to counter the Principality of Zeon’s mobile suits, which were rumored to be in development. The project’s inception in March U.C. 0078 marked a significant turning point in the history of mobile suit development.

The Early Stages of the RX Project

Initially, the project relied heavily on speculation and simulations, as formal inspections and reconnaissance were hindered by the tense diplomatic situation between the Earth Federation and Zeon. The project’s staff and military officials were also hindered by their limited understanding of mobile suits. Despite these challenges, the RX Project led to the development of several innovative technologies, including the Core Block System and the learning computer.

Prototypes and Setbacks

One of the project’s earliest products was the prototype combat vehicle RTX-44, which was originally designed as a next-generation main battle tank. However, its mobility was extremely poor, and it was eventually refined into the RX-75 Guntank with the assistance of defected Zeon scientists. The RX-76, a space-use only mobile weapon, was another product of the project, but it too fell short of being a true mobile suit.

Breakthroughs and Integration into Operation V

Despite the setbacks, the RX Project allowed the Federation to accumulate valuable technological expertise. Following the outbreak of the One Year War, the project was integrated into Operation V, which provided a clear direction for mobile suit development. This integration enabled the development of mobile suits capable of countering those used by the Principality of Zeon in a remarkably short period. The training of pilots began in parallel, and simulators resembling actual mobile suits were completed several months into the war.

Legacy of the RX Project

The RX Project’s integration into Operation V led to the development of the “RX series” of mobile suits, with model numbers prefixed with “RX.” The sole exception was the RX-76, which entered mass production as the RB-79 Ball. The project’s legacy can be seen in the numerous mobile suits that followed, which played a crucial role in shaping the course of the One Year War and beyond.
