Gundam’s Speed Demon: The Gallop-Class Transport Ship

Gallop-Class: The Mobile Suit Gundam’s Groundbreaking Transport

The Gallop-class is a revolutionary land-based hovercraft transport that made its debut in the iconic anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam. This remarkable vessel is designed for speed and mobility, prioritizing the transportation of mobile suits over firepower.

Design and Features

The Gallop-class boasts a unique, box-shaped hull with a nuclear thermal hover system, allowing it to float effortlessly above the ground. Eight thermonuclear jet engines provide propulsion, while a navigation bridge at the front of the hull serves as the command center. In combat situations, the staff relocates to the left and right combat bridges, which also function as escape boats in emergency situations.

Armaments and Defense

This transport ship is equipped with a pair of twin machine guns on either side of the navigation bridge, primarily used for anti-aircraft and ground defense. Additionally, a twin main gun is mounted at the rear of the ship, intended for long-range cover against ground targets, but also capable of anti-aircraft purposes.

Operational History

During the One Year War, a Gallop-class transport served as the mobile headquarters for Ramba Ral’s unit, tasked with destroying the White Base. Although the mission ultimately failed, Crowley Hamon managed to escape in the ejected bridge. Later, Hamon led another attack on the White Base, utilizing the Gallop’s cargo unit, but her plan was thwarted by the Gundam.

Variants and Appearances

The Gallop-class has made appearances in various forms of media, including television, manga, and video games. A variant of the Gallop-class appears in ∀ Gundam, featuring a smaller design and lacking the rear-mounted twin main gun.

Action Figures and Collectibles

Several action figure sets have been released, featuring the Gallop-class and its accompanying mobile suits. These sets include the Mobile Suit in Action (MSiA / MIA) “Gallop & MS-05B Zaku I (Ramba Ral Custom)” action figure set, available in both Asian and North American releases.
