Gundam’s Darkest Hour: The Turbulent Rise of Neo Zeon

The First Neo Zeon War: A Turbulent Chapter in Universal Century History

The First Neo Zeon War, also known as the Haman War, was a pivotal conflict that ravaged the Earth Sphere from March 3, 0088, to January 17, 0089. This war marked the beginning of a series of Neo Zeon movements that would plague the Earth Sphere for decades to come.

The War’s Origins

In the aftermath of the Gryps War, the Earth Federation and AEUG were severely weakened, while Axis Zeon, led by Haman Karn, suffered minimal losses. Seizing the opportunity, Haman renamed her forces “Neo Zeon” and sought to revive the glory of the Principality of Zeon. Mineva Lao Zabi, the last surviving member of the Zabi family, was appointed as the figurehead ruler, with Haman as the de facto leader.

The Conflict Escalates

A rebel faction led by Glemy Toto soon turned against Haman, transforming the war into a three-way struggle. The conflict raged on, with both Neo Zeon factions virtually wiping each other out. The war finally came to an end with the Battle of Axis, where both leaders died in battle. With its leadership gone, Neo Zeon surrendered to the Earth Federation.

Technological Advancements

During the war, Neo Zeon introduced high-performance machines that pushed the technological envelope, including psycommu and quasi-psycommu machines. In contrast, the Earth Federation Forces focused on developing economical mobile suits that could be produced quickly to take advantage of their superior numbers. The AEUG, meanwhile, relied on the powerful MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam and the new SCVA-76 Nahel Argama assault carrier.

Key Events and Battles

The war was marked by several key events and battles, including:

  • The attacks on the Argama
  • The awakening of the Double Zeta
  • The moon moon detour
  • The attack on Axis
  • The ambush at Granada
  • The journey across Africa
  • The second Battle of Dakar
  • The Neo Zeon civil war
  • The Battle of Axis

Aftermath

In the aftermath of the war, the AEUG and Karaba disbanded and rejoined the Earth Federation forces. Some surviving members of the AEUG and Karaba eventually became part of a new elite counter-insurgency taskforce, the Londo Bell, commanded by Bright Noa. The remnants of Neo Zeon’s Africa Front division refused to surrender and continued fighting against the Earth Federation using guerrilla warfare.

Legacy

The First Neo Zeon War set the stage for the subsequent Neo Zeon movements and conflicts that would shape the course of Universal Century history. Its impact can still be felt today, with many of its key players and events continuing to influence the world of Gundam.
