The Birth of a Legend: The Gundam Development Project
A New Era in Mobile Suit Technology
In the aftermath of the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces, in collaboration with Anaheim Electronics, embarked on a top-secret mission to bridge the technological gap with the Principality of Zeon. This endeavor, known as the Gundam Development Project, aimed to revolutionize mobile suit development and ensure the Federation’s supremacy in the space age.
The Genesis of the Project
Following the war, the Federation realized that Zeon was a decade ahead in mobile suit technology. To counter this, the Gundam Development Project was proposed, with the goal of creating advanced mobile suits that would give the Federation a strategic advantage. On October 5, 0081 U.C., the Federation Assembly approved the Federation Forces Reconstruction Plan, paving the way for the project’s initiation.
Anaheim Electronics: The Driving Force
Anaheim Electronics, a megacorporation with vast resources and expertise, played a crucial role in the project. Having absorbed Zeon’s primary mobile suit manufacturers, including Zeonic, Anaheim Electronics possessed the largest mobile suit development and production capabilities in the Earth sphere. The company proposed several development plans, which were eventually greenlit, marking the beginning of the Gundam Development Project.
The GP Series: A New Generation of Mobile Suits
The units developed as part of the project were collectively known as the GP Series, with “GP” standing for “Gundam Project.” These mobile suits, including the RX-78GP00 Gundam GP00 “Blossom” and the RX-78GP01 Gundam “Zephyranthes,” represented a significant leap forward in technology and design.
Challenges and Setbacks
However, the project was not without its challenges. In January 0083 U.C., the Delaz Fleet, a group of Zeon remnants, learned of the Gundam Development Project and infiltrated Anaheim Electronics. This led to the Delaz Conflict, which resulted in the theft of the RX-78GP02A Gundam “Physalis” and the destruction of much of the reconstructed Earth Federation fleet.
The Aftermath
In the aftermath of the conflict, the Federation erased all information on the Gundam Development Project, and the technology developed was sealed away. This led to a stagnation in mobile suit development until the Gryps War. It wasn’t until November 0099 U.C. that Anaheim Electronics made public a portion of the data relating to the Gundam Development Project, shocking the mobile suit development industry and finally solving the long mystery of the “missing link” between first and second generation mobile suits.
Legacy of the Gundam Development Project
The Gundam Development Project marked a significant turning point in the history of mobile suit technology. Although the project faced numerous challenges and setbacks, it paved the way for future innovations and advancements. The GP Series, in particular, served as a benchmark for subsequent mobile suit development, influencing the course of the Universal Century timeline.
