The Fateful Space Colony: Laplace
A Beacon of Hope Turned to Ashes
In the vast expanse of space, a Stanford Torus-type colony named Laplace was meant to be a symbol of unity between the Earth and its celestial neighbors. This orbital bridge, designed to rotate every 75 seconds, was intended to provide a gravitational force similar to that of the Moon. However, its fate was sealed on the eve of the Universal Century, when a terrorist attack destroyed the colony, killing everyone on board.
A Ceremony Turned Catastrophic
On the night before UC 0001, a grand ceremony was held at Laplace to mark the beginning of the Universal Century. Prime Minister Ricardo Marcenas delivered a speech, outlining the new charter for the era. But amidst the celebrations, a group of terrorists, hired by George Marcenas, reprogrammed the upper optical disc to focus solar rays onto the residential block. The resulting explosion destroyed the colony, leaving only one survivor, Syam Vist.
The Aftermath: A Legacy of Deceit
The destruction of Laplace had far-reaching consequences. The incident led to the prime minister’s residence being declared off-limits, and harsh restrictions were imposed on space colonies, forcing them under the Earth Federation’s control. This move sparked resentment between the Earth and its space-faring citizens, sowing the seeds of discontent that would eventually lead to the One Year War.
Laplace’s Box: A Symbol of Power and Deceit
Syam Vist, the sole survivor, came into possession of the stone tablet containing the original charter. This artifact, known as “Laplace’s Box,” became a powerful tool for blackmailing the Federation. The box’s existence was used to expose the conspiracy against spacenoids, but its contents were eventually concealed to prevent further conflict. The box’s secrets were guarded by the Vist family, who used it to control the Vist Foundation. However, this power came at a terrible cost, as the box’s secrets led to a cycle of patricide and filicide within the Vist and Marcenas families.
A Legacy of Destruction
The remnants of Laplace remained in orbit for nearly a century, a haunting reminder of the tragedy. In UC 0096, the colony’s ruins were finally destroyed in a battle between the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam and the MSN-06S Sinanju. The destruction of Laplace served as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of humanity’s struggle for power and control.
