The Dopp: Zeon’s Atmospheric Fighter Aircraft

The Dopp is the Principality of Zeon’s only atmospheric fighter aircraft during the One Year War, featured prominently in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Notable pilots of the Dopp include Garma Zabi and Norris Packard.

Design and Features

The Dopp was designed for combat in dispersed Minovsky particles, with a cockpit situated above the rest of the aircraft to provide the pilot with a large field of view. This design allows the Dopp to remain airborne even if a wing is severely damaged, as seen when the RX-78-2 Gundam cut off a wing from Garma Zabi’s Dopp.

Armaments

The Dopp is equipped with two 30mm 6-tube missile launchers, one mounted on each side of the cockpit. These weapons are the Dopp’s only viable anti-mobile suit weapons. Additionally, the Dopp features two 20mm Vulcan guns, one mounted in the center of each missile launcher pod. While ineffective against mobile suit armor, these guns are useful for combat against other aircraft, intercepting incoming missiles/rockets, destroying mobile suit sensors, and attacking lightly-armored vehicles.

History

The Dopp was introduced as part of Zeon’s Earth invasion force in the early days of the One Year War, serving as the main fighter jet of Zeon’s air force to support and protect their mobile suits from aerial attacks.
