Solomon’s Fateful Hour: A Battle for Supremacy

The Turning Point of Solomon

The thirty-fifth episode of Mobile Suit Gundam, “The Glory of Solomon,” marks a pivotal moment in the series. First aired in Japan on December 1, 1979, and later in North America on September 6, 2001, this episode sets the stage for an epic battle between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

A United Front

The episode begins with White Base, led by Captain Bright Noa, joining forces with other ships from the Earth Federation fleet. As they prepare for battle, Bright meets with Fleet Commander Wakkein to discuss their strategy. Meanwhile, Kai Shiden, piloting the Guncannon, observes a Public assault ship, wondering about its unusual cargo.

A Brother’s Anger

On the Zeon side, Dozle Zabi is furious about the inadequate supplies and mobile suits provided by his brother, Gihren. The arrival of the Big Zam mobile armor only adds to his frustration, as it’s still a prototype requiring construction. Dozle’s anger boils over as he yells at his underlings for failing to locate the Tienem fleet.

A New Ally

Char Aznable, Lalah Sune, and Mulligan arrive at Solomon, where Char thanks Cameron for his assistance. Cameron hopes Char will leave soon and not return, but Char responds that Side 6 only exists as long as it’s convenient for Zeon.

The Battle Begins

As the Federation fleet approaches Solomon, Wakkein orders the deployment of the Public ships to create a beam interference field. Amuro Ray and Sayla Mass reassure a worried Kai, while Wakkein explains that the new fleet will use its weapon against the fortress if they can hold out for 15 minutes. The battle commences, with Dozle ordering his troops to fire upon the Federation fleet. White Base and other Federation ships retaliate, and the mobile suits are released into the fray.

A Desperate Gamble

As the battle rages on, the Federation prepares to launch the Solar Flare System, a massive array of mirrors designed to reflect a powerful beam of light at Solomon. Dozle, meanwhile, orders the launch of meteoroid missiles, but they’re too slow to intercept the Solar Flare System. The beam strikes Solomon, causing devastating damage and heavy casualties.

Aftermath

In the aftermath of the battle, Hayato Kobayashi is injured and taken to the infirmary. Fraw visits him and tries to reassure him that Amuro is different from the rest of them. Dozle, determined to uphold the Zabi family name, prepares to launch a final attack with the Big Zam.

This episode marks a significant turning point in the series, as the stakes are raised and the battle for Solomon reaches its climax. The fate of the war hangs in the balance, and the characters must confront their own limitations and fears in order to emerge victorious.
