Earth’s Fortress: California’s Naval Powerhouse

California Base: A Strategic Stronghold in the Universal Century

Located on the Californian coast, California Base was a massive naval installation comprising 20 large bases, featuring a dozen naval, aerospace, and weapons development facilities. As the largest naval yards in the Earth Federation Forces, it played a crucial role in the One Year War.

A Hub of Military Activity

During the war, California Base was captured by the Principality of Zeon on March 13, U.C. 0079, becoming a major terrestrial base for the enemy forces. The facility was repurposed to produce Zeon submarines, significantly boosting their naval capabilities. However, after Operation Odessa, the remaining Zeon forces suffered heavy losses in a failed assault on Jaburo, allowing the Federation to recapture the base on December 15, U.C. 0079.

A Hotbed of Technological Advancements

California Base was also a hub of technological innovation, with the assembly lines producing eight RX-77-4 Guncannon II units in the final month of the war. Additionally, the base saw the service of the RX-78-6 Mudrock Gundam, piloted by Lt. Agar, in a bid to prevent the Midnight Fenrir Corp from escaping Earth.

Interesting Facts and Trivia

  • California Base refers to a collection of bases along the West Coast of the US, rather than a single installation.
  • The base was used by Zeon to escape from Earth after Odessa fell, due to its size and capabilities compared to other bases.
  • There is no “Operation California” equivalent to Operation Odessa, as the Zeon forces were unable to form defensive lines during the retaking of the base.

Appearances in Media

California Base has appeared in various Mobile Suit Gundam media, including Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front and Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny.
